Below is an open letter from our Founder...

Dear COHL family,

Thanks to those captains who completed the survey I sent out a few weeks back. Most of you want to safely return to play (as do I). I really appreciate your input.

Over the course of the last few months I have been monitoring the numbers like many others and hoping that we would be able to have some sort of season this year. Well, our Governor has just suspended all indoor sports (again). The numbers are rising (again). Hockey is not being played, and nationally, more states are shutting down. The rinks we play at are also understandably taking these precautions. The general consensus seems to be that most simply do not wish to be responsible for putting the health or lives of their customers at risk to play hockey. Hockey players are tough and smart, and many of you are willing to take risks to play the game you love as long as masks are worn and safety measures are in place. I get it. Unfortunately, without rinks in operation we cannot play. Therefore, it pains me to say we will not be having a COHL winter season this year.

It seems like the only news I have for you today is bad news. But it’s not. Why? Well, for example, I’m looking into running an outdoor tournament in February if it is safe and doable. I know it’s not a full season, but at least we could get out there and play.

I’ve also been researching a possible expansion to the league, starting with the addition of a summer roller hockey league so that we can play year-round. I had tried this before, but we didn’t give enough time to plan and promote it. Now I have time. I’m also looking to change up some of our COHL ice hockey rules based on player input I’ve received over the years. The biggest change I will likely make next season is to move us to a 70-minute stop-time game format similar to most other recreational hockey leagues.

Bottom line - I plan to use the extra time during this “off season” to make improvements to the league, but I cannot do so without your input

Please complete the following online survey so that I can make informed decisions to improve our league when we return to play. Those who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 credit for next season

Thank you for being part of our COHL family. Please have a safe holiday season and I hope to see you on the ice next year.

The COHL is anxiously awaiting our ability to return to league play due to the impact of COVID-19. The health and safety of our players and staff is of utmost importance. The COHL and our rink partners are following the sports safety guidelines set by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Please reference this web page to see the current status (see the section titled "Current Conditions Allow for the Following Types of Play per Sport Risk Level"). The COHL is considered "Level 3 Type of Play" since we conduct "intra-league play."

The COHL is currently holding off on opening registration for the 2020-21 winter season and has been in contact with team captains from last season in regards to whether or not teams are comfortable returning to league play this season, assuming restrictions will be lifted prior to December 1, 2020.

Please come back and check this page for ongoing status updates leading up to December 1, 2020.

Please stay safe and healthy everyone!
